This was my first app built using Rails 5. In recent years, I had found myself mostly newer Javascript frameworks/libraries like Meteor, React or Angular and hadn’t really been keeping up with Rails (even though it had been one of my favourite frameworks when I was really getting more serious about learning to program). The issue with Ruby on Rails however, is that it requires several out-of-the-box approaches in order to get it working with something like web sockets. Rails 5 introduced action cable (essentially a built-in version of web sockets) which helped to make it much more of a competitor to modern day Javascript frameworks.

I also had an opportunity to play around with Google’s API.AI for the first time. This engine is a relatively easy way to create an AI chat bot that uses machine learning to learn from its user inputs (I used it here to help answer any questions the user might have, search for stuff etc).
